ARTE-Sendung Archäologie 2.0 – Mit Hightech auf Spurensuche

Der europäische Kultursender ARTE zeigt am Samstag, den 17. Juni 2017 um 22.40 Uhr in Erstausstrahlung den neuen Dokumentarfilm „Archäologie 2.0 – Mit Hightech auf Spurensuche“, der von Radio Bremen unter Regie von Susanne Brahms produziert wurde.
„Altertum trifft auf hippe Technik: In Berlin entwickeln Archäologen gemeinsam mit Game-Designern virtuelle Kopien beschädigter Stätten, wie die eines Tempels in Aleppo. In Irland suchen Wissenschaftler mit geophysikalischen Methoden nach den sagenumwobenen Ringwallanlagen und jungsteinzeitlichen Hügelgräbern. Eine Reise in die virtuelle Vergangenheit…“, so die Ankündigung auf der ARTE Mediathek-Webseite, wo schon jetzt vorab ein Filmtrailer zu sehen ist.
Dabei stapelt der Filmtitel genau genommen eigentlich zu tief: Denn das, was gezeigt wird, ist er aktuelle State-of-the-Art in den archäologischen Wissenschaften zu digitalbasierten Prospektionen, Visualisierungen, Analysen, vernetzten Daten und Informationen sowie Archivierungen, der über erste größere Digitalisierungsmaßnahmen und Anwendungen seit den 1990er Jahre weit hinausgeht, was man als Archäologie 2.0 bezeichnen könnte. So wird ein Großteil des weitgefächerten Spektrums der modernen Archäologie 4.0 vorgestellt – besonders im Hinblick auf virtuelle Räume und neue Präsentationsmöglichkeiten für die Museologie, die archäologisches Wissen interaktiv und virtuell (an-)fassbar für neue Besuchergruppen erschließt. Des Weiteren wird gezeigt, dass der „Quantensprung“ der Wissensvermehrung in der Archäologie in den letzten Jahrzehnten maßgeblich durch den konsequenten Einsatz von digitalen Methoden bedingt ist, wie der Film sehr anschaulich verdeutlicht und zwar anhand der systematischen Auswertung von per Befliegungen erhobenen LiDAR-Laserscandaten für die Landschaftsarchäologie, die mit der massenhaften Erkennung von bisher unbekannten Bodendenkmalen einhergeht. Dabei wird ein ganz neues Bild einer prähistorischen Kulturlandschaft aufgezeigt, das den Menschen u.a. nun auch in den Kontext größerer, überregionaler Beziehungen stellt und damit grenzüberschreitende Vergleiche weit besser ermöglicht.

Expert Forum on “The future of archaeological knowledge curation 2021-2026”, 16-17 June 2016 in Athens

The ARIADNE Expert Forum “The future of archaeological knowledge curation 2021-2026” on 16-17 June 2016 in Athens, Greece is organized by the Digital Curation Unit, IMIS-Athena Research Centre. It is co-organized with the Faculty of Information (iSchool), University of Toronto and the Department of Informatics, Athens University of Economics and Business as part of the activities of ARIADNE – Advanced Research Infrastructure for Archaeological Dataset Networking in Europe.

The Expert Forum aims to unite an international community of researchers in a constructive debate on the use of digital technology to ensure the future value of pre-existing archaeological knowledge through further curation, access and reuse. In tandem with organized archaeological databases, corpora and repositories it will reflect on the future of past excavation data and archives, commercial archaeology reports, archaeological museum collections, corpora and gazetteers, historical and ethnographic testimonies, grey literature, and visualizations of archaeological entities. It will seek to synthesize the experiences, know-how and insights of participants on how to address the growing curation crisis in archaeology in an increasingly pervasive networked digital environment, and on the challenges faced and opportunities offered by digital infrastructures in the next 5-10 years. The viewpoints invited are multi-disciplinary and diverse, ranging from academic researchers to practitioners, and from archaeologists to specialists in information, archival science, computer science, and science and technology studies. ARIADNE is looking for informed and thoughtful contributions to an interactive process, rather than for a pre-prepared formal talk or conference paper.

This Expert Forum is an initiative of the ARIADNE Special Interest Group on Archaeological Research Methods and Practices, and seeks to take forward the work of a highly successful Expert Forum on Digital Futures of Archaeological Practice 2020-2025 organized in 2015. It is part of a Summer School on the Digital curation of archaeological knowledge: New approaches to digital research, information management and communication in archaeology, planned to take place in Athens between 12–17 June 2016 in Athens, Greece, as an ARIADNE (WP8 – Data and Dataset Design) Trans-National Access (TNA) activity. The Summer School is structured in two parts: a Workshop from 12-16 June, and the Expert Forum on 16-17 June.

A limited number of bursaries, covering the cost of participation, travel and accommodation to a maximum of 1000 Euros, are available to prospective participants who are employed by or are registered as students in an institution located in one of the EU Member States and Associated States. All levels of applicants, from experienced scholars to graduate students, will be considered. Applicants should specify if they wish to attend the Workshop, the Expert Forum, or both. A selection panel will be evaluating bursary applications on a rolling basis until 5 June 2016.

On the road towards a Digital Research Infrastructure for archaeologists

Digital data infrastructures for the arts and humanities are currently being developed within the framework of various projects in Germany and Europe. Among these projects, DARIAH (Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities) is one of the largest projects. And it is designed as a long-term project.[1] DARIAH focuses primarily on philology and history. But the project is open to other disciplines. So DARIAH is also conceptualizing a data infrastructure for archeology. The cooperation with other infrastructure projects (such as IANUS at the German Archaeological Institute – DAI) is a key component in the architecture of the digital data infrastructure for archaeologists.[2] Furthermore it should be taken into account the collaboration with the project CLARIN (Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure).[3] This data infrastructure project is geared to linguistic needs. Within the network of the different data infrastructure projects, DARIAH could be aimed to harmonize the national activities on the EU level. International data networks of archeology are desirable in related regions such as the North and Baltic Sea coast to go beyond existing administrative boundaries of research.

But what are the specific needs of archaeologists to a digital research data infrastructure? Is it even possible to implement a centralized research data infrastructure (that is accepted by the researchers) in the very heterogeneous landscape of archaeological sciences in Germany? Therefore, it seems very important right from the start of the project to involve as many partners as possible in the conception of the infrastructure. The structure of federal states in Germany did not enable the foundation of a national archaeological data service, such as in the Netherlands or the UK.[4] The political conditions are contrary to centralized efforts. Thus, a decentralized architecture of the data infrastructure represents a solution to the existing problem. The cooperative project with equal partners should bring together both: the research at the universities as well as at the national archives of administration. It makes mutually accessible the respective databases for all partners. Forthermore the DARIAH service will provide a redundant long-term binary data storage with sovereign rights of data privacy and security requirements.

ArchaeoLandscapes

ArchaeoLandscapes ist ein Projekt der Europäischen Union, das die Kooperationspartner der archäologischen Institute, Universitäten und Landesbehörden zusammenbringt und somit den Dialog im europäischen Kontext voranbringt.  Die Fundstellenlandschaften werden besonders mit Methoden der Luftbildarchäologie, aber auch mit der einhergehenden Interpretation von Aerial-Laserscanning- und Satellitendaten-Befunden sowie Prospektionen der Geomagnetik, analysiert. Das Projekt ArchaeoLandscapes hat aber auch zum Ziel, den durch Baumaßnahmen teils sehr gefährdeten Bodendenkmalbestand innerhalb des Weltkulturerbes durch zielgerichtete Prospektionen systematisch zu erfassen, zu dokumentieren und im Bestand zu sichern.
